Your Daily Focus: Hockey Cards

We are all connected in magical ways we can’t even imagine. I would like to share a testimonial from Dave Rose in Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada. He so eloquently tells a story of the magic of giving and receiving with an eight-year-old.

Here it is (thanks for sharing Dave):

Hi Rick,

Let me share with you one example of how your Extreme Thought Makeover has made a positive impact in my life. Recently, while sorting through some of the things stored in the basement, I came across a storage box filled with hockey cards that I had carefully collected 30 years ago.

It wasn’t that they had been forgotten but rather that I didn’t know what to do with them. There were literally thousands of cards in the box, many of which have been appreciating in value as players retire and are inducted into the hall of fame. There were even unopened wax boxes and packs containing the original gum inside. As a side note, I had stopped buying hockey cards when companies no longer put gum in the packs –  some time around 1990.

Sorting through these cards would have taken me weeks, even months of my spare time and since they really don’t display well, they would have ended up back in the box for years to come. Out of the blue, I received a phone call from an eight year old boy who’s Dad has been a good friend of mine since college. He asked me if I had a Rocket Richard card (an outstanding player from the 50′s and 60′s) that I could spare. Later his Dad let me know that he was an avid hockey card collector who was interested in yesterday’s stars as well as those playing today.

This inspired me to mail to him a Richard card. His response was so enthusiastic, it showed that he is a true collector. This is where your program kicked in and inspired me to do something that collector’s rarely do – I decided to give that eight year old boy the entire box of unsorted hockey cards for his birthday with the only stipulation being that he didn’t eat the gum (can you imagine after 25 years!).

My apprehension over parting with the cards turned to joy while watching him open the box. He squealed with delight as his dexterous little fingers sped through the cards. His joy was pure and he was oblivious to any monetary value they might have. In fact, those cards provided him with more joy in the first twenty minutes than they had given me in the last twenty years.

Later I realized that I had enjoyed those moments with him as much he had and still feel great thinking about it. Storing the box would have cost me energy; by giving it away, positive energy was created.

My story could be complete at this point but the Universe wasn’t finished with me yet. A couple weeks later, out of the blue, I received my own gift in the mail. Not one, but two boxes of old Matchbox toys that had me squealing with delight and acting like an eight year old. The bonus is that the Matchbox cars display so much better than cards ever could!

This wouldn’t have been possible without your coaching on opening pathways by removing physical objects, the joy of giving and the art of giving and receiving and perhaps most of all – that we are all connected in a Universe that has everything we could ever want.

Thanks for every thing you do.

  1. Awesome story Dave!!

  2. Brilliant Dave! Thanks for sharing. I am in this exact phase and love the reaction of individuals who receive my gifts. I am in the same situation with baseball cards and wonder if some youngster will come knocking on my door looking for an old timer card who I could then surprise. I love thinking about it!

  3. My natural impulse after reading this: I want to bring joy to the lives of my two roommates. Thanks for the attitude adjustment
