Your Daily Focus: Highs

Everything in your past is open to interpretation.

Growing up, I learned a great technique around the dinner table. It was called “High Point, Low Point.” Each person at the table reflected on their day and shared with the family what they recalled as their high point in the day and their low point in the day.

It was all about how each of us remembered the events of the day, and to share how each one pleased us or displeased us. It was a nice way to share something personal and to gain awareness of what each person went through at least during part of their day.

There certainly are variations that can be used. How about “Transition Point.” Describe something that happened in your day that you initially thought was going to be a bad thing and describe how it actually turned out to be good. I actually had that happen just yesterday. Someone I was meeting with was running 30 minutes late. During the thirty minutes that I spent patiently waiting in their conference room, I unexpectedly came up with a new perspective on presenting the problem I needed to solve, and it resulted in an unexpected and highly favorable solution by the other party. I don’t think the outcome of the meeting would have been as favorable if I had not had the extra time to change my perspective on the problem.

How about “High Point, High Point.” All those at the table can go on a shared rampage of appreciation and talk about all the amazing events and most positive feelings they had throughout the day. Not only will there be a huge confluence of positive energy around the table, but the individuals will also gain understanding of what truly makes the others happy.

Invent a variation of your own, and try it. If you have an example you’d like to share with the other readers of the Daily Focus (actually in 48 countries now) please leave a comment below. Please consider doing this, as some of the greatest learning happens here when people share real life examples of these positive tips.
