Your Daily Focus: Deprogramming

01.20.2011 · Posted in Quotes / Daily Focus

Whatever your situation, you can change and grow and expand, and it all starts with a thought.

I want to expand on the story I told yesterday morning about my personal programming to become a negative thinker during my Anesthesiology training in the 1980’s, and how that perspective on identifying every possible risk and being prepared for it penetrated every aspect of my life.

If you desire to change any aspect of your life, you can. If you are a doctor and want to stop being controlling and bossy in your marriage and with your kids, you can. If you are an attorney and you want to become less fearful about other people “attacking” you, you can. If you are a pageant contestant and want to become less obsessed with how everyone else sees you and judges you, you can.  If you are an athlete, and you want to become less competitive in conversation and less focused on winning, you can. It just takes one step at a time.

At a point ten years after my medical training I decided I wanted to live differently. The first step in this transformation was a thought. And then I repeated that thought. And then again and again and again. Soon the idea of becoming a positive thinker became a habit of thought. Soon after that my actions and behavior started representing my new habit of thought. At that point it became a belief, and then there was no turning back.

Interestingly enough, as that new belief took hold it pulled me away from Anesthesiology, and my quest to help people find the true root cause of their diseases was born. Now I have the joy of really being in alignment with my career in all aspects.

My process was a gradual one, with one baby step at a time leading to the next logical step. It can go slow or fast, but it does start with a thought.

Think about what you do all day, and how that impacts your thoughts. Think about what you desire for your future. If you desire to change and grow in any aspect of your life, look at what you are doing with the majority of your time. This is the place to start that new thought.  It can take hold, become a new belief, and ultimately transform your life!

Be thankful for the being you are, and the attributes you have, as they likely have served you well. And never stop looking for more.

Enjoy the journey.

  1. I can not tell you how much I look forward to your daily gems.

Each day I revel in your writing, your thoughts, and it changes my day.

As with anything else, it starts with a thought, and my thought is to take time

to really hear your message, print it, and review it several times during the day

to re-onforce how powerful the message was to me.

    thank you, Judy

  2. Dr. Rick, I notice people have a tendency of letting their thoughts run along whatever track they are currently running on. You are so right that you can change your thoughts.

Don’t let them run rampant like an unruly toddler. Choose what thoughts to think and choose to derail the ones that aren’t serving you well.

    Thanks for another great post!

    Ronda

  3. Start with a thought, believe it, now make it happen. Brilliant.

” The new concept of instant Karma is that your future is determined by what you do, think and feel today. and those are now your choice. ” John Gray, Ph.D.
