Your Daily Focus: Cats

I wanted to share a guest Daily Focus today, written by life coach Judy Corkle in Chicago, whom I am dating. It offers great wisdom on the simplicity of life as seen through eyes of pure wonder. Oh, and often I imagine that she was a feline in a former life! Here it is:

Wouldn’t life be so simple if it was lived through the eyes of a cat.

I have two cats living with me now, who bring absolute delight and enchantment to every day. As I observe them, interact with them, and appreciate them, I am reminded of how pure life is and how it continually provides everything we can possibly need to be in a state of enjoyment.

These two buddies are opposites of one another, and are a perfect match. First there is Sammy. He is an amazing being! I think that he must be Buddha reincarnated, because he is as Zen as any living being can be. He is tolerant, which seems so unusual. He is sweet and cuddly; and he is also independent and self-sufficient. He never, ever, complains about anything. I have never heard him growl, not once. And, he is polite!

It’s as though he came to this Earth having been through a Miss Manners course! Of course, he is physically handsome: muscular, mostly black with a little white mustache, and a little white beard. He is definitely a guy’s guy,  but with a calm, peaceful nature. Oh yeah, and he’s a really good hunter and tree climber. He goes outside and disappears for hours, sometimes overnight.

Then there is Benny. He too is an amazing being! He is orange and white, with really soft fur and light frame. He is so social, he wants to hang around whatever people are in his home. All you have to do is look at him and he starts purring, literally. Naturally, he loves to be petted, and petted, and petted some more. For him, every single thing that he encounters is a toy. Doesn’t matter what it actually is; for Benny, it’s a toy. He loves to play, and Sammy is often the object of his attention. Jumping on Sammy, which Sammy is magnificent at tolerating, licking Sammy, following Sammy everywhere he goes…yes,

Sammy is the center of Benny’s world. Benny will seek attention from anyone, and everyone is his friend – including the neighbor’s dog and cats. He is open to everyone and everything. He can’t climb trees very well and can barely get down when he does; he doesn’t like to be outside for too long before he wants to come back in to get some attention; and he relies on Sammy to show him what to do next. But he is magnificent at chasing leaves, or finding a bug in the dirt, or rediscovering some plaything he has seen before as though it’s brand new to him. He is innocent and open and brand new, every single day. And he too is polite.

I marvel at their differences and how well those differences work with each other. I also marvel at how rich their lives are, even in the simplicity that they experience. They are such wonderful teachers about the magnificence of simplicity. They love the air, and the sun, and the grass. Lifeforms all around them fascinate them. They are continually interested in everything; they follow their impulse to go investigate anything that catches their attention. They just want to have fun, and they do.

When I see the world through their eyes I feel peaceful. I feel so much appreciation for life and it’s infinite variety; I feel so much inspiration to live life with a sense of fun, simplicity and adventure. And I feel a desire to live each day the way Benny does – as though everything is brand new; and the way Sammy does – as though everything is perfect the way it is.

They are wonderful roles models for me; I am so grateful that they came into my life. Oh, and I am madly in love with them, just because they are who they are.

Judy, there are many of us who feel the same way about our beloved pets. We have two cats as well, with two very distinct personalities. They bring much joy to our world. Pets love you for who you are, never, ever any conditions.

You can find more great cat stories in two books written by Vicki Myron, Dewey, the Library Cat and Dewey’s Nine Lives, stories about special lovely cats.

  2. Thank you Judy (and Laurie too) for acknowledging the cats in your lives. Cats role model sensitivity to our world and moving gracefully in it. They are exraordinary healers, consciously working with our energy fields, balancing and recalibrating us as they revel in our touch and sleep on our laps or by our sides. Did you know that they purr at various freqencies to balance and heal themselves and the beings they love? Again, this is conscious on their parts. I had the privelge of writing down cat wisdom in “Conversations with Cat.” Every day my own three cats delight, inspire and bring me joy. Simon is lying across my desk right now, as I type, ever- present and supportive. I have spent the last nearly 20 years helping people understand the gifts and wisdom of their own animals and of all animals. Because, as the French philosopher Anatole France, so beautifully put,”Until one has loved and animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” Thanks for being awake!

  3. Judy (& Dr Rick),
Thank you so much for sharing this fabulous insight into your kitties! I got a real kick out of it as I am thinking of thinking of my wonderful orange fluffy-puff, Crush, in many of your 2 cat’s carefree, fun-loving characteristics. It reminds me to appreciate him even more. Isn’t it amazing to have so much love stuffed into those little bodies?
    Much Love,
    Jody Pogo :)

Sammy and Benny mirror peace and love, though they are of different natures.
    This is a great pointer.

  5. Gosh, thank you everyone for your insights, and comments, and adoration, and cherishing. Our furry friends are such gifts to us and it’s wonderful to share our appreciation with one another, and shower it on them. :-)
    Life is GOOD.
    With love,
    Judy

  6. Wonderful article Judy! Your cats are truly amazing!
It’s so enlightening to know that even animals have so much to teach us, if we would only focus! Just look at the organized lives that ants lead!
