Your Daily Focus: Bills
I love paying bills. Think of the wonder in it. Imagine the magic of the simple task of writing a check to the electric company and mailing it in.
Wait, now that has me distracted by the magic of having electricity. What a wonder! Look around you… television, toaster, computer, refrigerator, microwave, and light bulbs! Light bulbs are simply the best, aren’t they?
Okay back to the check-writing idea. Think of the magic. Part of your check goes to the person in customer service answering calls who is so grateful to have a job. Part of the money goes to the manager’s daughter to pay for her prom dress. Part of it goes to the service technician willing to climb a pole in the middle of a storm to restore your power. Part of it goes to the coal plant worker who can finally get a new transmission in her 1997 Ford truck and use fourth gear again.
Part of the money in your check goes to the coal train engineer paying his wife’s medical bill for her mammogram. Part of it goes to the coal worker in Wyoming who sends money back home to his family in Albuquerque to feed his four kids.
Wow! Think of the magic in all that. What a privilege to be able to play a role in all of their lives. What a privilege to be able to write that check to the electric company. It’s such a simple task, but it has such a beautiful, far-reaching effect.
What a privilege to have electricity, and even more a joy to pay for it.
Mmmmm, I just love paying bills!
Enjoy,
Rick
Rick, I feel like we’re inside each others’ heads!
I had an almost identical conversation with someone yesterday.
Most people dread bills. I LOVE them, because the things that generate bills are the things that empower me to run my business, enjoy my animals, have a safe place to live, refrigerate my food, communicate with almost anyone in the world, eat food I didn’t have to grow and harvest – oh my…paying bills sends me into a rampage of appreciation!
If I’m writing a check (a rare deed these days), I’ll put a smiley face on the check. If I’m paying online, I send along gratitude and appreciation through the invisible yet oh-so-powerful web.
When I am paying at a store, I thank the clerk for his/her assistance and also feel such gratitude for being able to purchase whatever is in my cart.
Isn’t it interesting how living from gratitude brings about more abundance?
Thanks for another great story.
Follow your bliss!

I concur. Paying bills means that you are alive, have enough money and are benefitting from some great services. In short, a first world standard of living.
Keynesian economics theory describes the dollar multiplier effect that Rick speaks about. It is a wonderful example of how generosity spreads throughout society. One caveat is that large international corporations know this and try to scoop up those dollars by paying low wages to workers (both domestic and overseas). Send your money to fair trade companies that pay decent wages and increase the ripple of generosity throughout the economy.
