Your Daily Focus: Bad

04.19.2011 · Posted in Quotes / Daily Focus

Why do bad things happen to good people? There are no bad things.

I believe this is the ultimate answer to the age-old question in life. If you think about it on a small scale, it is easy to grasp. You get stuck in traffic so you get to hear something on the radio you might have missed. You sprain your ankle and then you meet the love of your life in the Emergency Room. You forget your lunch, so you get to enjoy a wonderful lunch out. You back your car into another in a parking lot, and you get the wonderful opportunity to be more accepting of self. It goes on endlessly.

If it works for the small things, then the same thought can work on the big things. It’s just that it feels a little out of reach at first. With practice though, you can get there. Remember Richard Carlson’s best-selling book “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: and It’s All Small Stuff?” Same idea. Huey Lewis wrote “Sometimes Bad Is Bad.” That means usually “Bad” is good.

Our experience is defined by what feels like ups and downs, steps forward and steps backward. But all along there is expansion. Each of life’s moments leads us to desiring more. When things feel great, we like it and focus on it, and attract more of it. When things feel awful, our desire is much stronger, and we set intention to move ever faster toward expansion.

There is no time in our life that we desire health more than when we are ill. There is no time we desire money more than when we are broke. There is no time that we desire love more than when we are lonely.

As your life unfolds, and you are living all of life’s beautiful moments along your journey, try to hold these ideas. It’s all small stuff. There are no bad things. Each moment is a gift, allowing you to desire something more. Everything in my life is perfect. And finally… good is good, but bad is even better.

With enough practice, you can really feel this deeply, and in that moment, you are living in bliss.

  1. Great message! I have experienced in my life that the worst moments/events have turned out to bring me the most wonderful people and moments in my life today. I totally embrace when “bad” happens because I know something amazing is coming right behind it. Thanks for the reminder. I laughed out loud when I read this as I reminded myself of all the good that I have.
