Your Daily Focus: Things

05.09.2011 · Posted in Quotes / Daily Focus

Things only carry the meaning we give them.

My Dad showed me two opposing energies. He was a total collector and accumulator in life, with train, toy, coin, and figurine collections. He was raised through the depression, which inspired him to save anything that might have a future use, like a nail, screw, yardstick, lumber, rags, or even a Styrofoam McDonald’s coffee cup!

He also showed me in his last days before his passing how peacefully he could let go of all things physical.  In the last five days he put absolutely zero attention on any physical thing.

It’s been quite inspirational. He has refreshed my desire to live with no attachments to physical things. On Friday I discarded three huge boxes of paperwork I had saved. Yesterday I sold eleven pieces of art, including my two favorite original oils I purchased in the eighties. They were wonderful, but they were also large and difficult to move. They also have significant value which would make it challenging to throw them into a Giveaway Day in the future.

There you have it, my Dad helped me to complete my journey and release the last two items I owned which held value assigned by anyone but me. I now only hold valuable those items I have to which I have assigned emotional value, which is the priceless value I give them, like the quilt my Mom made and the cut glass my Dad made, and a few of the sweet childhood creations my kids gave me.

Now I am truly free from the restraints and burdens of physical things. Wow, what a feeling. Try it! The tighter you hold them, the less they can breathe. The more you let go, the more they can fly in and out of your life with ease, and in perfect timing. When you are ready, I believe you will really love it.

  1. I have been on this journey since 2008. It feels so good every time I let something go. Thanks for the reminder as I think I just saw something in the garage that could be given away to someone that would need it. :-)

I agree! It makes life a lot less cumbersome if we can give things away at regular intervals. That keeps the cycle moving and I’m certain that there are a lot many people out there who have greater utility for many of the things that we discard. It’s said that what we can’t let go of actually possesses us, although we view it as our ‘possession’!
Letting go of things elicits a beautiful feeling of freedom and detachment and brings new things into our lives. And it’s good to know that what we give away will be of use to other people.
So let’s keep the cycle moving!

  3. Amazing, how things happen in our lives that push us towards becoming our higher selves. I have come to the realization that during my divorce and all the material things I felt a great loss have actually broken negative bonds that kept be from achieving my amazing self. I am in a Journey, and loving it!

Thanks Rick for sharing with us your gifts.

  4. That is awesome Rick! I not only help my clients do that (as a professional organizer) – but also myself. I too am on a new journey and letting things go that no longer have purpose and meaning. This is something everyone needs to do for sure… It changes so much in your life.

  5. Ambreen, thanks for your comment. I love the phrase you offered “what we can’t let fo of actually possesses us!”
    That is an amazing concept.
It reminded me of a story I want to share tomorrow.

I’ve been experiencing this the past three years. It is so freeing. Still working on it…mostly the paperwork now.
